I remember being a young cadet in the officers' course, as we underwent a workshop about leadership. One sentence that the commander said has made a deep impression and serves as the way for me to know if you are my leader or perhaps I am yours. He said: "you are not a leader if no one is following you, or they are following you out of fear and not free will, respect, and appreciation." Allow me to ask you this - accordingly, are you a leader?

Throughout my studies and career, I have had the honor and privilege to be mentored (not managed; not advised) by amazing leaders and people. All of them had one trait at least that made them amazing leadership giants (the kind I miss now days so much), being the ability to leave decision to the people with the expertise, even if and when they had the authority. It was not "my way or the highway", and if you professionally and respectfully challenged them, they did not retaliate or take actions to "show you who is boss."

There used to be a time where you were only considered successful if your team succeeds; There was no "failing up" or distinguishing your success and abilities as a leader from those of your team/employees. Sadly, such days seem to be over for a growing number of people.

There is a difference between a leader, manager, and commander, just as there is a difference between an adviser and mentor. This is a call to lead the proper way, and a call to mentor instead of advise.

A person can be a commander yet not a leader; They can be a great manager, but not a leader; and they can be a good leader and commander, and not know how to manage. We like to think that a person would be automatically all three. Ranks and titles are not what make either one out of the three, they do however give you authority and power. An adviser is someone that tells you what they suggest that you do, while a mentor is embedded into your existence, your goals, and your future success. I have three questions for you:

  1. Are you a leader?

  2. Are you a mentor?

  3. Are you both a leader and a mentor?

Respectfully,

Moran
